What a burnt taste actually is
The coil is a metal mesh wrapped around or against cotton. The cotton draws e-liquid up by capillary action; the coil heats the liquid the cotton holds. Get a puff that tastes of scorched cotton and the sequence broke down — the coil heated faster than the wick could re-saturate, so it cooked dry fibre.
That happens for a small set of reasons: the device is nearly empty and there's not enough liquid left to keep the wick wet, you're drawing faster than the wick re-soaks (chain vaping), or the power setting is higher than that coil can keep supplied. On a fresh device it's usually power or pace; on an old one it's usually the liquid running out.
If your device is adjustable, turn it down first
Anything with a power mode or a voltage dial gives you the fix directly.
